Classic Solid-State Optical Compressors for Studio Use
The UREI LA-3A is a solid-state optical compressor introduced in 1969, designed by Brad Plunkett. It combines design elements from both the LA-2A and the 1176LN, resulting in a unit known for its distinctive character, simple operation, and fast response. Using the T4B optical cell, the LA-3A features automatic attack and release times that vary depending on signal strength.
Responsive Compression with Simple Controls
Optical Circuit with Transistor-Based Design
Unlike the tube-based LA-2A, the LA-3A uses a solid-state design that delivers a different dynamic response—slower attack on low-level transients and faster attack on high-level ones. The T4B cell governs both the attack and release behaviors.
Minimal Controls for Quick Operation
The front panel features just two main controls: Gain and Peak Reduction. These adjust the output level and the amount of compression, making setup straightforward.
Flexible in Mixing and Tracking
Combines Concepts from LA-2A and 1176
Sharing components and design principles with both the LA-2A and 1176LN, the LA-3A delivers musical compression with fast attack, suitable for a wide range of sources.
Versatile Tone Shaping for Various Instruments
In addition to drums and percussion, the LA-3A is commonly used to enhance guitars, bass, and vocals—especially when working with dense arrangements or high-energy genres like rock.
