Compressor Unit with Flexible Control and Internal EQ

The Urei LA-22 is a dynamics processor that combines compression, limiting, de-essing, and expansion in a single unit. It is designed to offer detailed control over signal dynamics through multiple detection modes and frequency-dependent processing options.

Dynamic Control with Dual Detection Paths

The gain reduction section of the LA-22 is governed by two detectors: a peak detector and a variable detector. Both contribute to the compression behavior in varying amounts, depending on front panel settings, allowing fine-tuned control over how quickly and how much the signal is attenuated.

Built-In EQ with Output and Sidechain Capability

An internal equalizer is linked to the compression circuit and enables band-specific dynamic notching. The EQ also features a discrete output that remains active in all operational modes. By routing this EQ output to the sidechain input, the unit can be used for frequency-dependent ducking—such as reducing specific frequencies in response to other signals.

Expander Mode with Upward Dynamics

The LA-22 includes an expander mode that also functions as a dynamic boost filter, increasing the presence of quieter signal elements without affecting louder ones.
